A huge chocolate sculpture has been unveiled to mark Vangarde Shopping Park’s 5th anniversary. The creation was built by local chef and chocolatier Ashley McCarthy, who will feature on Channel 4’s Extreme Chocolate Makers from Easter Sunday. Ashley owns Ye Old Sun Inn at Colton.

The chocolate sculpture will be available to view all through Easter weekend before being donated to York Against Cancer to be raffled off.

Vangarde Shopping Park opened in 2014 to York’s only John Lewis department store, the region’s largest M&S store and a state-of-the-art Next store, alongside numerous eateries. Vangarde has maintained aims to be one of the most sustainable retail developments in the UK.

Centre Manager Deborah O’Donnell says: “We are so excited about the fifth birthday celebrations. I can’t believe five years has gone as quick as it has.

“The Vangarde team and tenants are really proud to have played a part in helping the shopping park grow in popularity in such a short amount of time.”

Vangarde’s anniversary is being celebrated with family-friendly activities over Good Friday and Easter Saturday, including face painting and children’s crafts provided by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.

On Saturday, Ashley McCarthy will be holding chocolate demonstrations in John Lewis at 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm.

Vangarde is also giving away £500 to spend at the shopping park in a Facebook competition.
