Store teams at Vangarde Shopping Park go green on National Clean Air Day
Vangarde Shopping Park is celebrating National Clean Air Day by encouraging staff to cycle, walk or take the bus to work. In return, they will be entered into a prize draw to win £50 to spend at the shops and restaurants within the shopping park.
This is part of Vangarde’s wider plans to become one of the most sustainable retail developments in the UK. The destination has already been awarded a BREEAM Excellent rating throughout the development. BREEAM is the world’s leading measure of a building’s environmental performance and sustainability with ‘Outstanding’ being the highest award.
In 2014, John Lewis York became the first department store in the world to be awarded BREEAM Outstanding status.
Deb O’Donnell, centre manager at Vangarde Shopping Park, said: “This initiative on National Clean Air Day lets our staff and the wider community know that we are very serious about sustainability.
“We want to help improve the environment in any way we can and if we can change the habits of our staff by encouraging them to travel to work in a green and sustainable way, then we are achieving what we have set out to do.”
“The team is continuing to develop ways of rewarding people travelling to Vangarde in a sustainable manner as we focus on continuing to reduce our carbon footprint.”
Vangarde Shopping Park and its store teams also work closely with local sustainable travel organisation iTravel York to devise sustainable travel plans for staff at the shopping park and find ways to further incentivise those who are more environmentally-friendly.
Stevie Nickson, a member of the Vangarde Customer Service team, has loaned an electric cycle from Get Cycling for the week and has already completed more than 50 miles over four days.
Stevie said: “I’ve been cycling to and from work for the past eight years and I have noticed how beneficial it is both mentally and physically.
“The electric bike has been seemingly effortless and I have thoroughly enjoyed loaning it for the week. We are working to encourage as many people as possible to use the many cycling racks we have at Vangarde, along with the Park and Ride that is available next door.”
Environmental awareness and sustainability are becoming more important than ever to both staff and shoppers at large retail developments and incentives such as this one on National Clean Air Day will help to enhance the attractiveness of Vangarde Shopping Park as a top retail destination in York.
