Alex pledges to run 10k to address men’s mental health
A member of the Vangarde Shopping Park Customer Services team has dedicated a significant amount of time to raise money for the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM).
Alex Pollard has pledged to raise money for the charity, including running in the York 10K in early August. CALM pushes to offer support to men in the UK who are in crisis via a helpline, webchat, and website, whilst also challenging today’s stereotypes of men through campaigns such as #ManDictionary and #BiggerIssues.
The charity was originally launched as a pilot in 1997 but was asked to end by the Department of Health in 2004. Due to a high demand for its return, it was then reopened as a charity in 2006 as a National Charity. Recently, the charity teamed up with ITV to raise awareness of male suicide rates by launching Project 84, a project that saw 84 life-size sculptures placed on the roofs of the This Morning building, and ITV HQ to represent the 84 men that take their own lives each week.
By running the York 10K in August, Alex is hoping to raise £250 to support the cause through his Just Giving page. The charity is close to Alex, after suffering from depression himself.
Alex said: “To be fundraising for such a significant cause, that is especially relevant now more than ever, is a privilege.
“The ‘man up’ mentality is limiting the amount of support men feel comfortable asking for, and this is a problem that we all can be affected by.
“I’m overwhelmed with the amount of support I’ve received so far and I want people to get behind this cause, especially considering how close this charity is to my heart.”
Deborah O’Donnell, Centre Manager at Vangarde Shopping Park, said: “Alex has received support from everyone here at Vangarde, and will continue to do so every step of his fundraising journey.
“The Vangarde team is working hard to give back to the community – it’s inspiring to see one of the members of our team pursuing charity work independently and striving to make a change by donating to a charity that is so close to his heart.
“We’ve donated a significant amount to various charities over the last few years, and Alex’s efforts demonstrate the core values our team has.”
