Vangarde Shopping Park shortlisted for prestigious award in first year of opening
York’s Vangarde Shopping Park has been shortlisted for one of the most prestigious awards in UK retail after only six months of opening.
The Vangarde team will find out on Wednesday, December 3rd if the Shopping Park has won the New Centre award at the British Council of Shopping Centres (BCSC) Gold Awards.
Vangarde, which boasts the city’s first John Lewis department store and York’s largest Marks and Spencer, is reputed for its aesthetically stunning modern architecture and sustainable practices. It includes an environmentally-friendly green wall, bat, bird and bee habitats and various pieces of artwork and sculptures made by local artists.
Part of the construction of the Shopping Park also included the creation of a suitable habitat adjacent to Vangarde, to ensure the 300 Great-Crested newts which once inhabited the area had safe and suitable habitation. The creation of the habitat was part of Vangarde’s vision to be environmentally-friendly and have a beneficial impact on the environment.
The Shopping Park was part of a three year project by the Oakgate Group, which started with the construction of the Monks Cross Park and Ride in 2004
Oakgate Group Managing Director Richard France said: “It`s great that Vangarde Shopping Park has been shortlisted, it is a testament to the design and construction team.
“The Shopping Park has been exceptionally popular since its opening in April, attracting many shoppers to both Vangarde and the City centre, which has seen a huge increase in footfall numbers.
“York is now competing with other strong, major retail destinations such as Leeds and to receive this national recognition is a feather in the City`s cap.”
Vangarde Shopping Park will now be visited by the BCSC awards jury, who will judge the retail offering, the complimentary uses, the sense of place, the ease of access and the wider regeneration benefits to determine the winner of the category.
Vangarde Shopping Park Manager Deb O’Donnell said: “Vangarde is adding significantly to the retail sector of York and this shortlisting is fantastic recognition of the hard work put into constructing and running the Shopping Park.
“We are looking forward to attending the awards ceremony in London on December 3rd – just to be shortlisted is an honour and demonstrates the positive impact we are making to the York economy.”
The awards ceremony for the BCSC Gold Awards will be at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Wednesday December 3rd.
