Caddick Construction complete work on retail units at the Vangarde Retail Park

Fit out teams move on to site as Vangarde takes shape

Following 36 weeks of construction on site, the main contractor at the £90 million Vangarde Retail Park, Caddick Construction is removing their last excavator from the main area of the development.

As the building work on the John Lewis, Next and Marks & Spencer units comes to a close, the Caddick team will be making way for the fit out workers. Caddick Construction’s presence on site will continue as the team concentrate on completing the food kiosks framework and fitting the external facades to the units.

Since work began earlier in the year 213 workmen have excavated enough stone to fill over 73 Olympic sized swimming pools, installed roofing which would cover over 42 acres and applied drainage which reaches almost four miles.

Andrew Murray, managing director, at Caddick Construction, comments: “It’s been a pleasure working on the flagship Vangarde Retail Park and it’s a great achievement to have completed work on the main retail units. The statistics the build has provided really highlight the manpower and hard work that has gone into the project.

“We’ve delivered this part of the site on time and worked with the retailers to facilitate a number of key features. This development has further bolstered Caddick Construction’s retail portfolio which includes The Ellesmere Centre and the redevelopment of Neston Town Centre in the North West.”

The new shopping destination will create 339,000 sq. ft. of retail space and will be home to the city’s first John Lewis, Next and a flagship Marks and Spencer store. A number of new lettings have now been agreed bringing some well-known, family brands to the area including Costa Coffee, Prezzo and Frankie & Benny’s.

Richard France, managing director of The Oakgate Group, commented: “The development is really starting to look like the final product. It’s exciting to know that the retailer’s fit out teams will be on site by 2 December and we’ll all be working towards the opening date in April 2014.”

The Oakgate Group secured outline planning permission for the Vangarde from the City of York Council in July 2012 and following months of environmental work including individually catching and rehoming Great Crested Newts, the Caddick team commenced construction in March 2013.

Set to open in Easter 2014, the Vangarde Retail Park will deliver 1,000 new jobs to the city and will provide significant funding for the new 6,000 seat Community Stadium, the proposed new home to York City FC and the York City Knights.
